<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dtWpoSjzv3s/UlshXGLuSdI/AAAAAAAADec/e4z1hU_HAQg/s1600/20130927_074524%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="112" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dtWpoSjzv3s/UlshXGLuSdI/AAAAAAAADec/e4z1hU_HAQg/s200/20130927_074524%255B1%255D.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="text-align: left;">During our autumn unit we learn all about owls! This year we decided to make fall colored owls. This was such a fun project (and makes for a very nice colorful display!). </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Materials:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 large paper plates</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 small paper plate</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Googly eyes</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
paint</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
hot glue (this is to make sure that everything stays together once you hang it up)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To start, I took the small paper plate and cut a small square out of the top (to help it look like the head of an owl). Then I took one of the large paper plates and cut it in half (to make the wings).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P_8CSumt9a8/UlshJxBjOJI/AAAAAAAADdk/DmJ4JMNjoVE/s1600/20130924_080456%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P_8CSumt9a8/UlshJxBjOJI/AAAAAAAADdk/DmJ4JMNjoVE/s320/20130924_080456%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Next we painted all of our pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNidEYZ7xzCTCY-pTzrrkPca2LnmZSjsmpelNr4qzRKMpwqYrcQHyUeldSTRyF543FltZ6YOnLpJFVrlvFkH8I8JPGDwyByseo6GPbhH496CQHCvElL7N9TXkH6kk1PcnxHi9vYT388eY/s1600/20130925_074145%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNidEYZ7xzCTCY-pTzrrkPca2LnmZSjsmpelNr4qzRKMpwqYrcQHyUeldSTRyF543FltZ6YOnLpJFVrlvFkH8I8JPGDwyByseo6GPbhH496CQHCvElL7N9TXkH6kk1PcnxHi9vYT388eY/s320/20130925_074145%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Once the pieces were dry we decorated our owls. We have been working on patterns so we practiced making a pattern on the owl's body.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h1Gj3bM3_Ms/UlshS9T-XLI/AAAAAAAADeM/_ORHTXbFmhw/s1600/20130926_073355%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h1Gj3bM3_Ms/UlshS9T-XLI/AAAAAAAADeM/_ORHTXbFmhw/s320/20130926_073355%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--5uqNo1zrxg/UlshVOl9BlI/AAAAAAAADeU/K-HMYGyDuEE/s1600/20130926_074454%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--5uqNo1zrxg/UlshVOl9BlI/AAAAAAAADeU/K-HMYGyDuEE/s320/20130926_074454%255B1%255D.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Once everything was dry we put it all together! We glued the wings on first (have the flat side facing out) and then glued on the head. We made a beak for our owls by cutting out a triangle from construction paper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LKALAzKPEa8/UlshQzBhm1I/AAAAAAAADeE/SbjZ5XtGUjc/s1600/20130925_132551%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LKALAzKPEa8/UlshQzBhm1I/AAAAAAAADeE/SbjZ5XtGUjc/s320/20130925_132551%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ns9M_vOOlgc/UlshaA1X5ZI/AAAAAAAADek/e-4Em5lfyxc/s1600/20130927_075737%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ns9M_vOOlgc/UlshaA1X5ZI/AAAAAAAADek/e-4Em5lfyxc/s320/20130927_075737%255B1%255D.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Afterwards, we named our owls and hung them up on our bulletin board and placed a few of the books that we had read about owls underneath. It makes such a great autumn display! </div>

Here are a few of the books that we have read so far this year!<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51TvakcvGJL._SX260_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51TvakcvGJL._SX260_.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Splat-Cat-Back-School/dp/0061978515/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378329586&sr=1-1&keywords=back+to+school">On Amazon</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I love Splat. This is a great one to read, especially with younger students (my pre-k students loved this book).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51UBqWGyQ0L._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51UBqWGyQ0L._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Georges-First-Day-School/dp/0618605649/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378329740&sr=1-4&keywords=back+to+school">On Amazon</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Everyone always loves Curious George. We read this book on the first day of school and many of the students were excited because they knew who Curious George was.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AxrxZ0grL._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AxrxZ0grL._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" width="249" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Every-Cowgirl-School-Rebecca-Janni/dp/0803739370/ref=sr_1_25?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378329875&sr=1-25&keywords=back+to+school">On Amazon</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you have not read this book (or the others about Nellie Sue), you need to add it to your collection. This is a great book about making new friends at school.<br />
<br />
Do you have a favorite book that you always read at the beginning of the year?<br />

My students were obsessed with this dinosaur activity! All you need is a few dinosaurs and some play dough. We rolled out our play dough and then pressed the dinosaur into the play dough. Sometimes we did the whole dinosaur, we did certain body parts, and footprints. It was so much fun! It was a great way to introduce fossils to young students since they were able to see how the dinosaur made markings in the play dough.<br />

During summer camp, we had dinoweek! We started dinoweek by learning about different types of dinosaurs. Our first project we did (combing science and art) was dinosaur footprints where we could compare the different footprints of the dinosaurs that we have. </div>

This is a fun packet that is very easy to use in your pre-k or kindergarten classroom. All you have to do is print, laminate and gather your counting bears<br />

Continuing with our science fun this summer we decided to combine one of our favorite science activities with art! We decided to do our baking soda and vinegar explosions on top of a piece of construction paper to see what would happen. First we placed a piece of paper in a container and covered it with a thin layer of baking soda (you do not need a lot).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqebUL0VZNS_bUSrOPB_Wo4OrPsDc0kER7KcAsGnRwcqQc2ic32Hd2DRP22V4aWZKmfNcG8AA_jea2IVZ5MiSez7tBRO4o7bDSBSDtBHXvCcc3khCWm8WnfA9C4ltnJWuyN4F77ULKVqQ/s1600/IMG_20130719_081214_260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqebUL0VZNS_bUSrOPB_Wo4OrPsDc0kER7KcAsGnRwcqQc2ic32Hd2DRP22V4aWZKmfNcG8AA_jea2IVZ5MiSez7tBRO4o7bDSBSDtBHXvCcc3khCWm8WnfA9C4ltnJWuyN4F77ULKVqQ/s320/IMG_20130719_081214_260.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Next we mixed our vinegar with food coloring.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mvF8YYMj0jM/UerY6yk6v3I/AAAAAAAACtI/ojyLtqMo2-Y/s1600/IMG_20130719_081016_715.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mvF8YYMj0jM/UerY6yk6v3I/AAAAAAAACtI/ojyLtqMo2-Y/s320/IMG_20130719_081016_715.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we used spoons to drip the vinegar on the baking soda. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we were done we pulled the paper out of the container to dry. The paper stayed in one piece. At first it was wet looking and then it dried out. You could see the colors where each reaction occurred. As it dried the colors were not a bright as when it was wet. We did have to shake of some baking soda when it dried but we have some fun art work now displayed! </div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uYovOe5CkiA/UeRtq3edoVI/AAAAAAAACrU/c3rVw9Gz9yo/s1600/IMG_20130621_105506_724.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uYovOe5CkiA/UeRtq3edoVI/AAAAAAAACrU/c3rVw9Gz9yo/s320/IMG_20130621_105506_724.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
We made frozen goo! This is a great summer science activity, especially for the days when it's too hot to go outside (or take it outside to play with!). To make the goo, all you need is a container, water, food coloring and cornstarch.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
To make the goo, I started with cornstarch in a container and slowly add water until all of the cornstarch has mixed with water. It will still be a liquid but all of the cornstarch should be mixed with water.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCw_m7D3Qlkx1gyvsxFnjxOE8vcFuBGN-VEqC5TgxpTMeBfEfEygTYE5-ef1a0c38H4fMxv-PGrIJVzeDCubyeKibEb5Leai6nMGHReV-uW5a0_X97uL6ClusuNMku4rPd46226p6X1S8/s1600/IMG_20130621_073125_296.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCw_m7D3Qlkx1gyvsxFnjxOE8vcFuBGN-VEqC5TgxpTMeBfEfEygTYE5-ef1a0c38H4fMxv-PGrIJVzeDCubyeKibEb5Leai6nMGHReV-uW5a0_X97uL6ClusuNMku4rPd46226p6X1S8/s320/IMG_20130621_073125_296.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I poured the goo into small cups and mixed in food coloring. Some we did 1 color, others we added multiple colors. It is a little difficult to mix the food coloring into the goo, which is good for adding many colors since they won't really mix together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EprvzNzhR04/UeRt6bDwedI/AAAAAAAACsA/1R858dPeOz8/s1600/IMG_20130621_074020_871.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9yInW7wzNzI/UeRt1G0AThI/AAAAAAAACr0/CNK2sDqxS38/s1600/IMG_20130621_104120_944.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9yInW7wzNzI/UeRt1G0AThI/AAAAAAAACr0/CNK2sDqxS38/s320/IMG_20130621_104120_944.jpg" width="320" /></a><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EprvzNzhR04/UeRt6bDwedI/AAAAAAAACsA/1R858dPeOz8/s320/IMG_20130621_074020_871.jpg" width="180" /></div>
<br />
<br />
Then we put the cups in the freezer. We left them over night, so I'm not sure exactly how long it took them to freeze. When we were ready to play we removed the frozen goo and put it in containers to play with (I definitely recommend putting it in a container because it gets messy as it starts to melt).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FGIuGYpA2Cw/UeRtwTz6DdI/AAAAAAAACrs/2ffQq2_sSQU/s1600/IMG_20130621_104745_086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FGIuGYpA2Cw/UeRtwTz6DdI/AAAAAAAACrs/2ffQq2_sSQU/s320/IMG_20130621_104745_086.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Everyone (including me) had so much fun playing with the goo. It was fun to watch it melt, and to move the melted goo around. Plus once it as melted you can still play with it (and probably would be able to refreeze it but we didn't). Once ours had melted the colors really started to mix together, which was great to use to review our colors and what colors we can use to make new colors. </div>

I'm linking up with <a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2013/07/monday-made-it-july-8-and-giveawayd.html">4th Grade Frolics</a> to share my scrapbook covered clothes pins that I made!<br />
<br />
I bought a pack of 50 clothes pins from Walmart and grabbed a few sheets of scrapbook paper from my supplies, mod podge and my craft knife. I started out by covering one side of the clothes pin with mod podge.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oXlyZzi3OrM/Udh7rNg5qEI/AAAAAAAAClw/qL-W_QCDA1Q/s1600/IMG_20130706_102734_951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oXlyZzi3OrM/Udh7rNg5qEI/AAAAAAAAClw/qL-W_QCDA1Q/s320/IMG_20130706_102734_951.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I laid the clothes pin down on the scrapbook paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sL2Kar75Jgs/Udh7s85mNRI/AAAAAAAACl4/-mB553sqyJM/s1600/IMG_20130706_102907_431.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sL2Kar75Jgs/Udh7s85mNRI/AAAAAAAACl4/-mB553sqyJM/s320/IMG_20130706_102907_431.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-veY-3QYXLzs/Udh7xDN4p6I/AAAAAAAACmQ/Ul56Gphlsc8/s1600/IMG_20130706_110824_036.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-veY-3QYXLzs/Udh7xDN4p6I/AAAAAAAACmQ/Ul56Gphlsc8/s320/IMG_20130706_110824_036.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">lining up the clothes pins on the scrapbook paper</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I gave the mod podge about 15 minutes to dry (some took a little longer. If it's not completely dry then it does not cut as well). Then I used my craft knife to cut around the edges of the clothes pin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EK8QYZE0h0w/Udh7zumHhmI/AAAAAAAACmg/bHbj7EOhQl4/s1600/IMG_20130706_112441_274.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EK8QYZE0h0w/Udh7zumHhmI/AAAAAAAACmg/bHbj7EOhQl4/s320/IMG_20130706_112441_274.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Ta da! I made 2 different sets. I did cover both sides of the clothes pin so that no matter what they get used for both sides are pretty :)<br />
<br />

<br />
After making these I really want to try to make some glitter covered ones next to use for displays. While working on this project it gave me lots of ideas for fun clothes pins to make, such as math themed ones for my math displays and I need to get some beach/tropical themed scrapbook paper to make beachy ones too. I'll be sure to share any ones that I make in the future!<br />

Besides for our <a href="http://divingintolearning.blogspot.com/2013/06/colorful-explosions.html">colorful explosions</a> activity, this science activity was the next favorite. We called it our "rainbow colors" since it was so colorful.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Materials: clear container, water, shaving cream, and liquid food color(s)<br />
<br />
To start, fill up a clear container (we used the shoebox size Rubbermaid containers and small Tupperware containers) almost to the top with water. Then on top of the water spray a layer of shaving cream.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dcoiD-f941M/UcnYQ7NfvbI/AAAAAAAACgU/ak7Qm0siy3g/s1600/IMG_20130625_110128_008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dcoiD-f941M/UcnYQ7NfvbI/AAAAAAAACgU/ak7Qm0siy3g/s320/IMG_20130625_110128_008.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then drip a few drops of food coloring on top of the shaving cream.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YM_8VCTeevQ/UcnYTNZplwI/AAAAAAAACgk/Ar9qaaLBD54/s1600/IMG_20130625_105540_322.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YM_8VCTeevQ/UcnYTNZplwI/AAAAAAAACgk/Ar9qaaLBD54/s320/IMG_20130625_105540_322.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8_sB7M4_kIsW47023O19EKLRYNTjoW6pau1ggOkHsKBzNVEen2JouUH3vLEuvWwpqUsJTSSmR9Uf1EYY8d-kW8GOTjgfANeqyWYU7S0DDbY-D5bSCKI1IXsj9Wx-rCqwzpCrhfcDJnEo/s1600/IMG_20130625_104934_503.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8_sB7M4_kIsW47023O19EKLRYNTjoW6pau1ggOkHsKBzNVEen2JouUH3vLEuvWwpqUsJTSSmR9Uf1EYY8d-kW8GOTjgfANeqyWYU7S0DDbY-D5bSCKI1IXsj9Wx-rCqwzpCrhfcDJnEo/s320/IMG_20130625_104934_503.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The food coloring will seep through the shaving cream at different rates. When the food coloring reaches the water it sinks and then starts to spread out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_G3bxfHKVEw/UcnYcZrgZ1I/AAAAAAAAChU/5SrM4_C7B8s/s1600/IMG_20130625_104759_489.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_G3bxfHKVEw/UcnYcZrgZ1I/AAAAAAAAChU/5SrM4_C7B8s/s320/IMG_20130625_104759_489.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is fun to watch as more colors start mixing into the water.<br />
<br />

<br />
This one was like a tornado as it mixed in the water. We had put the food coloring on the side of the container.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ntMbj_9UZAI/UcnYSOB_YOI/AAAAAAAACgc/zkJZt3fHPxY/s1600/IMG_20130625_105737_939.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ntMbj_9UZAI/UcnYSOB_YOI/AAAAAAAACgc/zkJZt3fHPxY/s320/IMG_20130625_105737_939.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After awhile the colors mixed all together, but it was fun (and pretty) to watch.<br />
<br />
Check out our <a href="http://divingintolearning.blogspot.com/2013/07/fun-rainbow-craft.html">rainbow craft</a> that we made.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M9XhCGguteg/UcnYi15AfnI/AAAAAAAACiM/Lsp4HDZs7Ts/s1600/IMG_20130610_135008_625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M9XhCGguteg/UcnYi15AfnI/AAAAAAAACiM/Lsp4HDZs7Ts/s400/IMG_20130610_135008_625.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
During our rainbow and colors unit we made this cute rainbow craft! <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/263671753156769890/">This pin</a> inspired this craft project and I was impressed with how well my class was able to do this on their own. We did have a few rainbows that were a little squashed due to trying to glue down the edges but overall they did a great job.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I cut a piece of black construction paper in thirds for students to use as the base to glue on their rainbow strips. I cut the rainbow strips out for the students prior to starting the project so that the the sizes would work for making the rainbow. I cut the red paper first and then did each color about 1/2 inch shorter than the previous color.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBcvhIoqm4hZ0-aV2vUi33oR4rt3xIr3RfoSTOL5SL8qk1TwghsO8kQV-oavTL-G1SovDAJlaFwibpWwXFBq_FbmlOfhBW_ZbpW8s_RvnseOco-KBwRZND-qWWZhfApeeue_jKmL6a-AE/s1486/IMG_20130625_073507_414-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBcvhIoqm4hZ0-aV2vUi33oR4rt3xIr3RfoSTOL5SL8qk1TwghsO8kQV-oavTL-G1SovDAJlaFwibpWwXFBq_FbmlOfhBW_ZbpW8s_RvnseOco-KBwRZND-qWWZhfApeeue_jKmL6a-AE/s320/IMG_20130625_073507_414-1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
To put it together you fold the edges and apply the glue so that the folded part (like a flap) is what you are gluing onto the black paper. You need to start with the purple (or whatever color you are using for the bottom layer of your rainbow).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I would recommend holding the flaps down for a moment to make sure that they stick. We did our flaps on top of each other as much as possible so that it was easier to make them stick on the paper. Once we had all of the layers on we did set something on a few of the edges to make sure that they would stay down.<br />

Our finished rainbows made a nice colorful display beneath our bulletin board showcasing where we had practiced writing our color words.<br />

Have you heard of RockNLearn? They offer all kinds of DVDs focusing on different skills, including phonics, math, science and social studies. Right now Educents (a discount website for educational products) is offering a set of the DVDs (there are 2 different sets to choose from) at a discounted price! You can click on the Educents picture (above) to go to their website. </div>

<br />
I watched the "Letter Sounds" and "Sight Words Level 1" with my pre-k class. They really enjoyed the songs that are in the videos and after watching the sight word video twice they were starting to remember the songs. The videos really kept their attention between the songs and the action going on in the videos. The video shows the sight words during the song so that students are able to hear and see the words plus whatever is going on in the video goes along with the sight word that is currently being practice. For example there is a song for learning big and little by using 2 sheep to demonstrate big and little. Overall, my class (and I) enjoyed watching these videos and the catchy songs.<br />

Even though I am working at a summer camp and not really getting the summer off, it is great! We have had science themes so far this summer and I have gotten to do many activities that I usually don't get to do during the school year. I've linked up again this month with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/currently-july.html">Oh Boy 4th Grade for July's currently</a>.<br />

As part of our colors and rainbows unit, we did colorful explosions! I did this last summer, and still had the pictures hanging up in our science center and the kids have been asking when were we going to do it this summer. We used baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, glitter and bowls. I set the bowls in the top of a large rubber maid container to help catch the explosion. </div>

The cupcake container was great because it helped to contain the mess plus it was the perfect size for small explosions! If you are going to do this with a group of students it was so much easier than when we used bowls last summer, plus less mess to clean up. </div>

Last week we did a fun activity focusing on absorption and color mixing. We used 3 cups, 2 paper towels, food coloring and water. We first talked about absorption and how we can use things like paper towels to absorb water. We demonstrated absorbing spilt water, and how we are able to remove water from paper towels. Next we set up our experiment. We lined up 3 cups, put water in the cups on the end and left the middle cup empty. I explained how we were going to put one end of the paper towel in a cup that has water and place the other end of the paper towel in the empty cup.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5xOMrUo3FoY/UcHpQ54bHFI/AAAAAAAACfI/Z3popBlQeIs/s1600/IMG_20130619_105637_332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5xOMrUo3FoY/UcHpQ54bHFI/AAAAAAAACfI/Z3popBlQeIs/s320/IMG_20130619_105637_332.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We decided to add food coloring to the water to make it easier to see the water being absorbed and to see if we could get the colors to mix.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YkiernGVnM8/UcHpLldmbCI/AAAAAAAACfA/HdwJRC91g0s/s1600/IMG_20130619_110951_654.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YkiernGVnM8/UcHpLldmbCI/AAAAAAAACfA/HdwJRC91g0s/s320/IMG_20130619_110951_654.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After a few minutes we were able to see the water being absorbed up the paper towel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivJyX9wXwJWV3WpCRfxzwKOTx8CYPkBQue4nJIQlmzjd-P2Tbsp11xmIU27weUH_o6W6VBgaQ4DE4pqzUDaAPQo2pIK2_oeTA87wVl1a7Z8PvW_fXz20EBNarvU_CcHcr_M17CyrmfBmU/s1600/IMG_20130619_111315_935.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivJyX9wXwJWV3WpCRfxzwKOTx8CYPkBQue4nJIQlmzjd-P2Tbsp11xmIU27weUH_o6W6VBgaQ4DE4pqzUDaAPQo2pIK2_oeTA87wVl1a7Z8PvW_fXz20EBNarvU_CcHcr_M17CyrmfBmU/s320/IMG_20130619_111315_935.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is what our cups looked like after about 10 minutes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ayRXHs-SdUSZQB6ersE2e1S3NbDpdd_BGsmqofCliiN_brzXjVI97b8jgk9hoXsKXYHAu9dqfJ4gfRHGJqoBWT8tLi0I-2_Wm6xs7zojwcxE7xBtNuvSbeuVxC7cvnPGPuKQXvFc96E/s1600/IMG_20130619_111716_881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ayRXHs-SdUSZQB6ersE2e1S3NbDpdd_BGsmqofCliiN_brzXjVI97b8jgk9hoXsKXYHAu9dqfJ4gfRHGJqoBWT8tLi0I-2_Wm6xs7zojwcxE7xBtNuvSbeuVxC7cvnPGPuKQXvFc96E/s320/IMG_20130619_111716_881.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This was a great activity to do to combine lots of skills. The colors mixing in the middle cup was fascinating, especially if the absorption rate was different for each paper towel and you could see how the color in the middle cup changed as more colored water was added. We did the activity also using red and blue, and red and yellow.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more color and rainbow activities!<br />

To start off with, we are focusing on colors and rainbows. Our first project is mystery words (and pictures) art. I premade a few sheets by writing sight words (using a white crayon) on white construction paper. I explained that I had written color words on the white paper using a white crayons. I asked the class how could we see what was on the paper? The students suggested using our "paint markers" since we knew from previous experience that the color from these markers would not stick to the crayon. Students could only color a part of the paper and had to guess what word/words was on their paper before they could color all of it to see if they were correct.<br />

Afterwards a few of the students decided they wanted to draw mystery pictures for their friends to color. This was an interesting (and had a few frustrating moments) experience since they quickly realized they could not see what they were drawing.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">swirl</td></tr>

They did a great job though (once they figured out a few tricks). One student had a friend helping her and kept on having her friend put her finger on the paper so that she would know where she had just drawn. Another friend kept rubbing their fingers across the paper because they realized they could feel where they had drawn with the crayon.<br />
<br />
This was a fun project. They enjoyed trying to guess the words on their paper and were laughing at their friends (sometimes crazy) guesses.<br />

For the end of our insect unit we learned about snails and made a cute snail craft. Here are a few books that we read about snails:<br />
<br />
"Swirl by Swirl"<br />

This book focuses on snails and how the swirl is formed on their shells.<br />

</tbody></table>
This book has great photographs and facts about snails.<br />
<br />
After learning all about snails we made our own snail. One of the goals was to try and make a swirl pattern on the snail's shell.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--FBB8CNjGFw/Ub4h2b8xi0I/AAAAAAAACc8/31FJQ0TSTbI/s1600/IMG_20130522_134703_472-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--FBB8CNjGFw/Ub4h2b8xi0I/AAAAAAAACc8/31FJQ0TSTbI/s320/IMG_20130522_134703_472-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
To make the snail craft you need a paper plate, construction paper, tissue paper and glue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1gCu_baXvpg/Ub4hYVvNCtI/AAAAAAAACcI/YL9mtlJ0JlY/s1600/IMG_20130514_134146_188.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="112" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1gCu_baXvpg/Ub4hYVvNCtI/AAAAAAAACcI/YL9mtlJ0JlY/s200/IMG_20130514_134146_188.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qw9QmYUDqeU/Ub4hdgPAPOI/AAAAAAAACcQ/S3E9_9-MMH0/s1600/IMG_20130514_134214_921-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="148" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qw9QmYUDqeU/Ub4hdgPAPOI/AAAAAAAACcQ/S3E9_9-MMH0/s200/IMG_20130514_134214_921-1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Some of the students drew a swirl on their plate, others just went for it and did pretty well at keeping the swirl shape.<br />

Here are a few random facts:<br />
Did you know that snails can not smell?<br />
Snails hibernate during the winter.<br />
Snails can live for 15-20 years (the ones that are pets).<br />

<br />
It's time for the Pinterest linky party again! I love Pinterest! Especially as a teacher, there are so many great ideas on Pinterest and I have an ever growing list of things that I want to make for my classroom. I really do believe that teachers should get some sort of professional development hours for all of the time we spend "researching" on Pinterest. My (recent) inspiration for this linky party:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have said that before!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I wish it did count- I get more from blog stalking than I do from some of the workshops that I have attended. </div>
